His ship USS Iwo Jima was the primary support during the operation and received casualties from this attack as well as supplying all needs of those on shore. While on active duty he married his high school sweetheart Lara Cholip. They had their son Eric in 1985. Before embarking on his final cruise he moved them back to Wisconsin to stay with family awaiting his end of obligated active service.
Returning to Milwaukee finished his obligation in the Naval reserve at Milwaukee. Also attending Milwaukee Area Tech College in Milwaukee , WI. he attended college from 1987 to 1987. Upon graduating with knowledge of the electrical trade. Was able to land a couple positions with local contractors wiring homes . Their second son Richard was born in 1990. In 1990-91 winter had a fast melt stopping most home construction.
A friend offered a job in Louisiana and he moved there with hopes of a better life. The plant closed within a year and he was again out of work. A neighbor offer work building scaffold. After several years building scaffold in chemical plants, refineries, shipyards, and on offshore rigs he was offered a startup of a new contract in Northern Alabama. In 1993 he moved again looking for a better life. The scaffold work didn't work out as planned and he decided to test the local market for electrical work. Working for several contractors for 8 years he gained a vast amount of experience in the electrical trade. While there Lara learned to drive and Earned a Bachelor's degree in Accounting. Longing for home she wanted to move back to Milwaukee to be with family. She took Richard and went back up north and circulated her resume. Eric wanted to finish out his sophomore year in high school . He stayed and packed up the house and when Eric was finished they set off for Wisconsin. Even with years of electrical experience there wasn't anybody hiring electricians. Lara's sister suggested maintenance and he found a position with a local commercial truck and bus repair shop that needed someone to take care of the facility. It was part time but it was work. He also found work at a nursing home that he could work around the other part time job. Soon the body shop closed and he was down to part time again. Finding availability the operations manager got him on a "full time" schedule that was very confusing to most. They facility had a down turn in residency and they were looking at putting everyone in maintenance on a short schedule or possibly even layoffs. He found a food factory that hired him and took the pressure off the others by removing himself from the equation. After working in the tortilla and tortilla chip plant for a couple years they sold it to a national company and he was asked to see if he could fill a requirement that they have a certified electrician on staff. Again going back to school to take refresher training he took the Wisconsin master electrician exam and passed. Obtaining this license he felt he was entitled to a significant pay increase for fulfilling the request. The pay raise offered was far below the market for such a skill and he sent out resumes. Finding a position at an investment casting foundry was content and worked well with the people there. However in 2008 the bubble burst the economy crashed and within a year they were letting people go. Moving to nights to keep the job until eventually even that was eliminated. Took another foundry job that didn't pay nearly as well. After awhile was contacted by an old coworker from the tortilla plant and he said everything was better there now. The Plant engineer that knew my skill set offered me a very good pay to come back. Taking with him what he learned about inventory management from the first foundry he set about fixing the tortilla plant parts room. Their work schedule was not a good one and it was soon evident a change was needed. The investment casting company position finally opened back up . Full Summary
