in the early eighties I founded a company called custom marble concepts. A cultured marble installation company out of Lubbock Texas and in a few years we (me and my partner Matt Ratcliff ) had gotten pretty good, so good he and I were doing, just the two of us. We were doing more installations then the manufactures 3 1/2 crews total. That’s 7 men. That lead the owner to start giving us all the out of town jobs and the harder more complicated designs which we did flawlessly which lead to doing the Cabelas personal home in Sidney NE and Danny Whites home (the QB for the Dallas Coyboys)and Mary Kay’s home in Dallas (Mary Kay’s Cosmetics). A few years latter Reaganomics went it effect with Ron Reagan is president and the oil crisis shut down home construction and we had to close the doors. Fast forward about 5 years and my father and I had bought 5 Jiffy Lubes in Tulsa Ok. And in 1992 we were involved in a race team at the local track Tulsa Speedway. We ran a class modified sprints we won the championship that year the same year the governor of Okla presented me with an award for outstanding accomplishment for my work with handicap I was recognized by David Walters the governor of Oklahoma remind hiring handicaps and training them and help integrate them into society. It’s not the award I’m proud of. I was most proud of the two young men who overcame the handicap and became contributing member of society. We were able to turn those stores we bought and started to makes profit. After 3 1/2 years of hard work y wife (Donna Purdom Carlile) took some time off and went on the first vacation I had ever been on. Two weeks out of the office and off to The Daytona 500 and then on to a Cruise to the Bahamas. It was a blast. The day we got back my father informed me that he had sold the business and I said he can’t do that without my permission and he said “I’ll give you exactly 30 days to match the offer of 1.2M for his 51% or he’s selling it. I was 28 years old. My wife was the office manager and a good one and I was the operation manager and trainer, claims handler, store maintenance man and everything else and a good one. Our accountant knew y wife and I were responsible for the companies success so he hated to see us lose our. Company we worked so hard for. He took us around to his friends ( the Presidents of three bank) and explained we situation because you know a 28 year old with only 3 years of college doesn’t have 1.2 M in the bank. Bless his heart because we tried. Five years earlier we had paid $300k for the stores. With Mars help the very best we could do was $600 thousand with was double what we had paid for the stores. I was hoping sense my father had promised e that when he retired again the stores would be mine and I had paperwork to prove it. He laughed out loud when I told him I had backing for ply $600k. And eve louder when I ask for him to except patent for the rest. At closing as VP and Share holder of 49% I had to go the the closing. And I sign away my company. Pier the next two years I received $30,000 and the next years tax return Mark had prepared for us said we owed $5700 on taxes because we didn’t with hold taxes from the $10,000 I received for the non compete agreement I signed at closing. I know it’s not an excuse but I wasn’t aloud to read the contracts I was signing. There was mounds of paperwork. The closing took 3 1/2 hrs to complete. My father took the money for himself and trying to cover it up. When he found out Mark had leaked info to me. My father fired him and threaten him then called me and threatened me. He died a few years later and my mother after 49 years married to my father remarried a man she meet at 40 year elementary class reunion. In less then a year she was gone with the money and turned it all over to him and his family and has not come back to Tulsa once that I know of. I’ve never been invited to there home and only spoke with my mom twice sense the day she said that’s what she was going to do. They have a ranch and race houses and new vehicles now and my mom says she’s never been happier. I left my job at Phillips Petro for that business with my father. I’m going to be 55 in a few weeks and I’ve been struggling ever sense. There’s way more back stabbing I took but that’s the cliff notes of my life and didn’t do anything to precise any of it. Now sense then there’s been times in my life I’ve been less than a model citizen but I’ve never done anything to harm, miss treat, cheat or steel from anyone on this planet.
