I was born in the Netherlands and attended school in that country. Trained for an international business career.
My first assignment was in Kampala,Uganda. I worked in that country for 2 1/2 years as a merchandising assistent manager.
Left that company and joined Firestone Plantations Co in Port Harcourt,Liberia.After 0ne year
I was promoted to Wholesale Manager of the United States Trading Company in Monrovia,Liberia . I held held that position for 3 years after which I took a leave of absence and
moved to Phoenix,Arizona to attend Thunderbird Graduate School of International Management. After graduating I rejoined Firestone Tire and Rubber Company in Akron,Ohio
and was assigned to the Firestone International Corporation 's Export Department during the second half of 1969. In January 1972 I was promoted to International Sales representative
in Hongkong. After a few months the head office decided to move me to Singapore to establish a sales division of the Firestone Rubber Purchasing Company which had been in that country since 1915 and to close Firestone's sales company in Kuala Lumpur ,, Malaysia.
October 1975 we moved to Akron,Ohio to a new assignment as Assistent Export Manager. I remained in that position thru June 1977 when I was promoted to General Manager of the Firestone Operations in the Netherlands. Primarily a wholesale company distributing product in the Netherlands with a retail subsidiary Pardel BV . After 2 years in that position I was transferred to Firestone France in Bethune France and appointed General Sales and Marketing Manager overseeing companies in the Netherlands, Belgium,Luxemburg and Germany.
After one year the Swedish company was added to this assignment.
Early 1981 I requested a transfer to the head office as my wife had become very ill and wanted to be closer to her family. She had been diagnosed with breastcancer 5 years earlier . Doctors in Belgium advised that she had become immune to treatments and probably would die within
10 t0 12 months.
My request to transfer was immediately granted . I was then appointed Export Manager for Eastern Europe,Africa ,The Middle East ,Asia and South America .
At the start of 1983 I took over an export dept in Brentford England in addition to my other export markets . For the next 6 months I divided my time between the offices in Akron,Ohio and
England . During July my son and I moved to England. Months later the company split off Asia and South America to concentrate on Europe,Africa and the Mid-East.
1985 saw another move to Madrid , Spain. The company had established a new European Head Quarters for manufacturing and sales in that Country. Firestone Spain facilities were the largest in Europe with several factories. I continued my responsibilities I had acquired while in England. In 1989 another reorganisation took place in Europe as the Firstone Tire and Rubber Co was purchase by the Bridgestone Corp. of Japan.
They decided that I and some of my people would be best placed in England. I then started a new office in Kingson upon Thames ,Surrey,England.
In 1992 I moved to Nairobi Kenya as General Manager of Firestone East Africa 1969 Ltd with responsibilty for Kenya,Uganda , Tanzania ,Rwanda and Burundi.
End of 1998 I moved to Cary ,NC to retire.
