Physically challenged at a young age, Dragomir overcame his limitations to become a high performance athlete and Olympic Games medalist at 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games in weightlifting. Dragomir also won 3 medals at the 1983 and 1984 World Weightlifting Championships and two medals at the European Championships. Dragomir founded and run the USA Weightlifting National Resident Athlete Training Program in Colorado Springs in 1990.
Dragomir was also the USA Weightlifting's National Team Coach from 1992-2004 and coached US National Weightlifting Team at the 1996 and 2000 Olympic Games. Among athletes Dragomir coached are National, Pan American Games and International champions: Mark Henry, Shane Hamman, Wes Barnett, Tim McRae, Tom Gough, Vernon Patao, Than Nguyen and Peter Ray Kelley who all became Olympians and national champions. Dragomir retired from coaching in 2004 as he became the International Weightlifting Federation's Vice President and Executive Board Member. He was a Board of Directors member for USA Weightlifting from 2005-2009. Dragomir served a a member of the US Olympic Committee Sport Science and Technology Committee from 1992-2003.
