Alex Vilanilam Koshy is a mechanical engineer with over 50 years of experience in India and the US. After spending two and a half decades-long life in the US, he has settled in Kerala with the conviction to resolve the social issues of his homeland and to assist the expatriates as well as less fortunate ones. Early LifeThe journey begins from Chengannur, located in the extreme eastern part of the Alappuzha district on the banks of the Pampa river. Alex Vilanilam was born to Chandy Koshy and Mariyamma Koshy in Chengannur. His family always gave importance to academic excellence. Former Kerala University Vice-Chancellor, John V.Vilanilam is his first cousin.After passing Mechanical Engineering, Vilanilam received his Master’s degree in Business Management from Cochin University. CareerVilanilam spent the first 25 years of his career in Indian industries (government and private). During the 1985-90 period he ventured to set up a water-based paint manufacturing unit, first time in India, with Swedish collaboration. Long bureaucratic delays and huddles in getting a license etc forced him to emigrate to the USA for protecting his family from the economic crisis.He never dreamt to lead a life away from his motherland though four out of his five sisters reside abroad. But destiny had some great surprises in store.It was in 1990, that Vilanilam decided to migrate to the United States of America. His career kickstarted in the City of Newark as an engineer which continued for nearly 24 years.Professional institute and publication of Book on KeralaA professional non-profit institute for promoting international interaction of scientists and academics was set up in association with eminent scientists like Dr. Sunny Luke, in the year 1998, by name international inst. for Scientific & Academic collaborationIISAC [www.iisac.org]. As its Executive Director published the first Book on Kerala Studies [‘An Introduction to Kerala Studies’] for teaching in colleges in India and abroad. Recognitions For his social interaction with the mainstream community, Vilanilam was appointed to the Dr Martin Luther King Jr. Board of Commissioners by three New Jersey Governors. He is a recipient of the Junior Chamber International (JCI) Award for universal brotherhood. Social lifeVilanilam was the Founder General Secretary (1995-98), America Regional President (2002-04) and former Global President (2006-08) of the World Malayalee Council (WMC). It was under his leadership that a team of Malayalee activists raised their voices to avail OCI cards for Indian immigrants. He also worked earnestly with the Indian Consulate, New York to sort out issues like charging huge fees by Govt. of India for surrendering old Indian passports etc.In 2016 Vilanilam organised the Pravasi Conclave Trust (PCT-www.pravasiconclave.org) to bring together all Indian organisations abroad to achieve Dual citizenship for all OCI cardholders. The organisation has also set up a system to help the expatriates mainly resolve business issues by providing arbitration and counselling.PCT is coordinating and promoting activities beneficial for NRIs and all global organizations such as WMC, FOKANA, FOMAA, WMF, IISAC, GOPIO etc are affiliated to PCT.Personal LifeVilanilam is married to Lalitha and the couple has a son Jinoy (Cochin & New Jersey) and two daughters Jinu (New Jersey) married to Prakash Kurian, and Jeena (Colorado) married to Isaac George Palathingal.Grandchildren: Kiran, Jianna, Nathan and Liya.
