From the earliest age, I wanted to be a scientist, in fact, my
eighth grade yearbook records my intention to go to MIT and
become a scientist. I can still clearly remember, back in 1957, the
conversation I had with my Dad who was seriously concerned
that the Soviets had beaten the USA into orbit with Sputnik 1. We
intently discussed my future career plans.
In a seminal speech, my sixth cousin President Eisenhower had
just used the Sputnik launch to encourage American youth to
study science and technology, so that we could catch up with the
The philosophic life is not the university. Until the 19th century most philosophers had nothing to do with universities, and perhaps the greatest abhorred them. One can’t imagine Socrates as a professor.
In 1957 the Soviets launched the first satellite, Sputnik, which upset all Americans. I promised my Dad I would be a scientist, both to please him
and as a patriotic gesture. My education in the then excellent
public schools of New York City, especially Brooklyn Technical
High School, prepared me well for this plan and also set my mind
on a lifelong path of enquiry into the nature of nature.
While I did well enough through high school, without really
working very hard, to get into MIT,
I dropped the ball after I arrived— probably because I had such powerfully interesting jobs that distracted me during the three summers of my
undergraduate years there. Not to mention that the late night bull
sessions about the nature of reality (often girls) with the really smart MIT kids, made it hard to get to morning classes.
During the three Summers at MIT I was an ordinary seaman in the deck gangs on three freighters; the S.S. San Angelo Victory of Prudential Lines steaming to the Mediterranean, the S.S. Flying Clipper of American Export
Isbrandtsen Lines sailing around the world, and finally the S.S.
African Mercury of Farrell Lines voyaging to South and East Africa.
The many adventures I experienced visiting over twenty
countries before age 21 as a sailor globalized my perspective
and powerfully distracted my attention from my studies in
Materials Science.
Since that time, while being an entrepreneur in several industries,
a husband, father, and a grandfather, I have read and enquired
extensively into history, religion, philosophy, economics, politics,
physics, astronomy, cosmology, science fiction, biology and
evolution. Not surprisingly, none of this knowledge has helped
my entrepreneurial career, which was mainly about selling
technology.
I believe that my not being a scientist but being massively
experienced, well read, experienced in the ways of the world, and
scientifically trained, puts me in a good position to put this all
together. As more of a myth-making philosopher, I am not bound
by academic and scientific methodologies and am therefore free
to speculate in those domains that science has not yet figured
out. I like to think of my narrative as a myth to explain our
species, a series of scientifically based beliefs, but not
necessarily the truth. I fully expect to modify these ideas from
time to time as our knowledge increases and as we gain insights
from others. I leave the rigor of the scientific method to my
sources.
My goal is to integrate in one narrative my explanation of what
has happened so far in this universe and what will happen in its
future. My mission is to bring about a universe-wide, multispecies,
multi-consciousness, trans-temporal level of being.
I confess that while I may entertain personal doubts from time to
time, I have no doubt about the importance of this cause. No
matter where you locate yourself in this Megaverse, if you are
reading this, I am talking directly and personally to YOU about
your future.
